4 Expert Design Tips for a Functional Home Office

More people have been working from home than ever before, and honestly, we kind of love it! While we don't know how long this trend will last, we want to help you create a beautiful and functional home office that is as stylish as the rest of your home. The key is to design a space you're excited to spend time in every day, and to make you look forward to 'going to the office' even if it just down the hall! When it comes to designing your home office it's key to keep functionality in mind. We spoke to interior designer Zoe Feldman to get her expert design tricks on how to make your home office as fashionable as it is functional.

Functional home office design

1. greenery to increase productivity

"Adding plants or flowers into your space will help bring the outdoors in to keep your space fresh and air clean."

We love this tip! We absolutely love the way indoor plants can make a space feel fresh, healthy and bring a zen vibe to any room. There's something about a fresh vase of flowers on your desk and a scented candle that make working long hours so much more enjoyable, maybe it's because using all of your senses helps to keep you present in the moment? Either way, we're going to look for some cool plants to use in the Tozai Home Succulent Planter Vase and fresh cut blooms for the Brea wooden vase and Katla Cachepot at the next farmers market for sure.

2 Accentuate your walls.

"Make your workspace feel bigger by adding a mirror on the wall, and painting your space a lighter color. These will help reflect light and keep the space feeling open."

This is a great design trick that rings true in any room, not just your home office, however most are using a smaller space to transform into their new home office so this is great. Don't feel like you need a small mirror for a small space, go bold and get a floor to ceiling mirror in a small room or even cluster a bunch of mirrors on a wall for cool texture and interest. Check out all of our awesome mirrors, especially the Cordelia hand rubbed black mirror Zoe loved herself.

3.SELECT FUNCTIONAL LIGHTING.

"To make your space brighter and help you maintain focus add task lighting into your workspace."

While we love abundant natural light whenever possible, additional light is needed for those early birders or late-night owls that, thanks to working from home, can actually get more work done than ever! When selecting lighting for your home office we like layering floor lamps for more ambiant light and desk lamps for a brighter light to help you read documents or write notes right on your desk. Some of our, and Zoe's favorites, are the Noir Scuba Gold Table Lamp and Jaime Young Mortar Table Lamp.

4.create the illusion of more space.

"Choose an area rug with small repeat patterns to create the illusion of more space."

So we just got Zoe's tip to use mirrors to make a space feel more open, airy and larger, we also agree with this next tip of using small repeat patterns on the floor and the walls. Smaller patterns make the surface feel more pulled back, hence more spacious. We love this example of Zoe using a thin pinstriped wall paper and a thinly striped rug together with a mirror, triple threat! This Global Views Hex Swirl Rug is a great example of a small repeat pattern.
